Time for vacation
Temps des vacances

A few more days before going. To go on vacation, away.
To close the door of the studio.
Difficult moment, anticipated long before, dreaded. Some do clean, sort. It seems I can't.

Quelques jours avant de partir. En vacances, ailleurs.
Fermer la porte de l'atelier.
Un moment difficile, longuement anticipé, redouté. Certains rangent, trient, nettoient. On dirait que je ne peux pas.

I've just managed to clean the bench (this picture is before cleaning) because of a dark dust covering all the surfaces coming from the work with the torch, burnt particules I guess?

It can sound mad, I know, but sorting everything and leaving the surfaces empty would be a kind of death... I need to know, to think that my work is still in movement, alive, even when I'm not working actually at it... I will switch off the lights though, I promise.

The last two weeks were these moments when whatever you do it's all awful and ugly. Time to go on vacation... And then yesterday I eventually completed these earrings. I like them but there is a little of solder that has leaked in the front on one of the pair, blah... so I will keep them for me. Weathered copper folded fan and antique filigree. Plus dark patina on the copper.

I'll be back from vacations by the end of July but then I'll be working hard on the renovation for the new studio so I don't know if I'll have time and energy left to complete some pieces, we'll see, I'll keep you posted...
I'll leave you now with some beautiful flowers from my garden in this summertime (click on the pictures to see them better).

The Ever Expanding Blog Post

First a huge thank you to the talented jeweller and my friend Marcia who invited me in this blog hop.
If you don't know her and her work I invite you to visit her Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/13Alternatives?ref=listing-shop-header-item-count, I love her jewelry and   her news are that she's working on a new line for Alternative Brides! Here is her blog :
http://thealternativefoundry.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/the-ever-expanding-blog-post.html

So here are the answers to her questions
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm making sterling silver rings these days, experimenting different techniques and finishes

©LucieTales

and I'm also working on some new earrings and some necklaces too. And some brooches. I'm always working on different pieces at the same time. Some I started sometimes ago but need maturing. From time to time, I add something or move one element and that's it the piece is complete. For the "De Profundis" ring for example, I had made the fusing part with the little starfish or barnacle months ago... and it lays there on my desk and a few days ago I completed it.

It happens that I often find the solution while walking one morning on the beach. I firmly believe that the mechanics of the legs induces something in the brain ;-)
For other pieces I need to be elbow deep on my table  and try this and that.
Other times, I have an idea at the terrace of the café and draw something but once in the studio

This journal is the work of my friend the very talented Louise of Bibliographica
at the bench it will become something entirely different. And sometimes I only follow the material, that's what happened with the "De Profundis" ring.
I  am constantly searching for something, in constant evolution alongside trying new techniques. Some techniques I keep practising because I took a liking to it, like the rivets for example, some come and go when needed. I don't plan my work like some jeweller do designing entire collections each season, I'm not able to do so, to create something I have to let go, whereas planning is controlling. I can eventually sort my creations afterwards in different collections because of the inspiration, like the Sea urchin or Shells, or because of elements, like the artisan ceramic drops I love using in my designs, or because of a repeating elements like the found brass eyelets.
I think I just answered the question "How does your creative process work ?" :)

Why do you create what you do?
For me it is a need, when I'm working at my bench I'm here and now, a whole person. It's necessary, I can't live without. Once or twice, I declared "okay, it's sunday, so I'm not working" and then I'm like a lion in a cage, not knowing what to do with myself... right, I can read, work in the garden, work on the renovation of the house but nothing can give me what working at my bench does.
Previously that "need" had taken different forms, drawing, photographing, working for contemporary artists, sewing, designing my garden, but it wasn't as fulfilling and gratifying as designing and making jewelry is. What I particularly like is that when completed and eventually sold, a piece of jewelry will be worn by someone I don't know and this person will give this piece a whole new life, will attach personal meanings and intimate emotions to it.

How your work differ from others of its genre?
Difficult question. I don't like comparison, I don't think it positive, it's even destructive. I prefer to say that I feel or recognize a little something in the work of some artists and artisans that speak to me in a particularly way.
Among these, I would like to name the wonderful work of Dawn from LaTouchables and of Jiorji of NearlyLost. On the 30th June it will be their turn to answer these questions!

The two pairs of earrings above are the newest pairs I made.

Already June!
Juin déjà

Each time I publish a post on that blog, I'm telling to myself, next time, a very short post but several times a week instead of one long long long post.... an dthen the week pass and eventually a second week, I procrastine, and I end with so much material.... and I could save some to shorten the post and make another one a few days later, but when I start I want to put it all, like when you invite people to dine over and you prepare a 4 courses meal, afraid that there isn't enough. Not very pertinent comparison though...
So now, you're been prepared ;-)

A tiny lovely bitsy pottery shard found on the beach

and I wanted to try some fine silver to make a setting instead of the usual sterling silver a little hard to push over. I love the fragment of the pattern. It looks like a feather. I used the shard as found.

I've oxidized it as I don't like polished shiny silver and I find that the oxidized silver fits the blue of the ceramic.
And the journal underneath my hand is my every day every moment companion, one without I'm lost, one of the extraordinary work of my dear friend Louise from Bibliographica.
The hand is mine, the only always available hand  ;-)

An interlude with Miss Midget, perfectly at ease on the laptop, very proud.

Mmm?!

Since the last post, I made  and listed some new earrings and they're all sold I'm afraid, so I find it's not very fine to show off some pieces no more available but then.... I love them and want to boast anyway, so here they are! ;-P

another version of the oval copper (in fact red brass) kuchi earrings, this time with some tiny delicate kuchi hearts, and when on the ears, the kuchi is dangling and making a tiny bell sound :)

A combination of some stylized flowers saw cut in brass and then aged, some antique silver plated  stampings riveted and the awesome Petra Carpreau's ceramic spikes, "fired with Black Diamond Glaze" hence the sparkly elements underneath

Some copper (red brass) with blue patina riveted. I did struggled to take loads of failed pictures, you know with some reflection on the metal and weird colors. And at the end, I remembered I once or twice used that brass cup, and bingo, this is the best picture!

Okay, to make amends I'll show you the ones I just listed so they're available - well they still are at the time I'm writing this ;-P

These earrings are inspired by the work of the most talented ceramist Petra Carpreau. These Platinum Lustre droplets are simply amazing.
I've made some shell shapes, slightly asymetric and curved. I've kept the hammered texture of the forming process and using Fancy's technique of the plumber putty, I've layered the inside and then powdered it with bronze powder.
So the material contrasts are reversed or in a loop, metal looking like ceramic looking like metal lookink like ceramic!

and I'll keep some material for the next post!

Rings, vintage finds and earrings
Bagues, trouvailles et boucles d'oreille

Flea markets are back, time to hunt!!!!

Some vintage chains, I love these rolo silver ones, I was running out of stock, a rosary and a monogram supposed to be set on a box (?), I think it's E.R. (click on the images to see them better)

Some more chains, un delicious locket, an exquisite flower brooch of underterminate material, a tiny child bracelet with a shell charm...

and a vintage art deco necklace with beautiful glass beads… I've already so many ideas for these coral glass beads!!!

and now from the atelier (the dark one…)

Dancing mother of pearl earrings with a special dedicace to Marcia of 13alternatives who is having a stressful time at the moment
I bet you've recognized Petra's amazing bronzy tips with a mother of pearl crackle glaze and I've been bold enough to combine them with real mother of pearl, vintage cabochons! but I think it works, very difficult to take pictures of them though, and some dancing vintage and antique seed beads, matte and glossy ones on a waxed linen thread knotted and I've used some ancient notions of macrame (I must have learnt that sometime during those horrible holidays camps)

A touch of roccoco : some rough apatite stones (thank you Marcia, I love them!) with some fancy golden findings on which I've added some darker patina to make them more dramatic. The color of the picture is not right, in person the apatite is slightly more green

Different versions of this riveted ring (I've already made two), above the sterling silver band is oxidized and thin (7mm) and below the sterling silver is brushed and the band is a little bit wider (8mm) but it is mostly the weathered copper band which is thinner so the gap showing the silver band is wider… question of proportions. Both are custom made.

3 years already!!!
Trois ans déjà !!!

3 years ago I took that decision to become my own boss, and I found that I'm always evolving and adapting throughout years, months, days to find out how to work, to find a balance between my need to be making things out of my hands, how to sell these things, the commercial aspect of it all, the stress I can charge myself with, the time it takes me to design new pieces…

These two necklaces I've made to answer a commission I've been offered. I wasn't asked to make two necklaces, but as I worked on the design I chose to try out different options from the antique settings I had in my stock. I thought the one she wouldn't choose would go in my shop anyway. ….and she chose both, hahaha! I  was very surprised!

Coincidence or cycle?  This commission comes after the customer saw a picture of  a necklace I made and sold in december 2010, exactly 3 years ago! But at the time, I merely "filled in the blank" settings whereas for these two necklaces I had to combine and solder antique settings to compose these new ones. And I'm grateful for this commission because I had to use a new technique. These antique settings from the 1930s were made of an alloy that melts at a low temperature, too low to use my traditional jeweller torch…. I have melt a few trying… so I had to learn how to use a soldering iron! (remember the two last posts?)   And I'm glad and grateful to my client so I can add this new tool to my palette as now I'd be able to do something with some of these antique settings…. well, I don't have more than one left of the big round ones but I have many of the smaller ones that hold the antique rhinestones.

I particuliary happy how this new pair of earrings turned out because I found a right match to Petra's gorgeous procelain Bone China droplets. First, let me tell you that these droplets are amazing, they are porcelain "fired with clear matte glaze, which has given the appearance of satiny marble. Then fired again with .999 fine silver."
These are Petra's words and it's funny because she told me I was in her mind with those china drops for some reason!

I've used sterling silver to make these elongated leaves using the foldforming technique for the first time and then doming the leaves slightly curved. The surface is textured and I kept the silver very white and frosted to match the frosted and matte delicacy of Petra's drops.

These drops are truly sublime, they have some irregular blue-green veins underneath the matte glaze just as marble.

Turquoise, custom orders and a sale
Des commandes, agate turquoise et une promotion

A custom order on the go… vintage setting, hammered upcycled aluminum and antique rhinestones

A new trial and error pottery shard with the Tiffany technique after more tutorials on youtube… There are still lumps and bumps but I kinda like it. This one will become a pendant in a necklace I'm working on too.
Thank you for all encouragements I received to my last post!!!I know that some other bloggers have a reply button in order to answer each comment, I'd love that but can't find it….argh!!!
Since this new test,  I've received precious tips from talented Janet (thank you so much, you're a generous soul!) and I've treated myself with the excellent tutorial from talented Tracy of Pipnmolly. Can't wait to practice my soldering iron again!

These are awaiting some attention, almost completed…. Coming soon!!!

A custom order completed, this ring is going to its owner tomorrow. Oxidized sterling silver, aged copper band riveted with 3 sterling silver hammered rivets

These earrings were listed some days ago, I intended to show them off last time, remember?
They're a variation from a previous one. Here are antique black cabs, brass hammered finding and textured vintage golden leaves.

These dramatic gothic neo victorian hoops earrings were also listed some days ago. Maybe I overdone the gothic side…mmmm?
Antique steel cuts beads, antique silver plated findings, antique black faceted cabs, antique black faceted spikes from Faginsdaughter, these black glass daggers are French, they spent most of their lives in Australia and came back to France… we can even suppose they went to England before their journey to Australia…I love to imagine the stories of vintage and antique finds

and last but not least a new thinnnng!

They're freshly listed. They have a je-ne-sais-quoi of …. Hispanic? Latin?
I don't know and I don't plan the paths my imagination goes.
Nuggets are turquoise agate, welle agate the color of turquoise, I love their matte irregular texture.
Below are antique settings flattened and aged with black patina, vintage tiny brass flowers that I've riveted to connect the vintage golden textured leaves that I presently play with in different variations. I like this new way, variations.

And a sale!!!!! Yes, you hear correctly!
From friday 29th to Monday 2nd december, 10% discount on all my shop!

That's all folks!

Travail en cours

Remember I show you the tools I brought from Birmingham? Do you remember a strange shape, black? Looking like a bat? No I'm not obsessed by Halloween looming....
Okay, I'm going to help you with the picture...

See? the black thingy? It's an anticlastic stake, more precisely an Eid Longhi anticlastic stake. And the hammer I've also circled is the hammer working with it.

Tadaaa!!! you obtain a shape with two opposite curves! it was a test made with my favorite material, up cycled aluminum (sorry for the poor lighted pictures).
