Some news

You've probably noticed my absence from my blog and the lack of new pieces.

For some months now, I've been checking the idiom that says ”when it rains, it pours”.

Last October, I bruised my right foot while simply walking (sesamoidopathy). For those who knew me, they know how much important it is for me to walk every day. It helps to balance my inner self.

In March I bruised my right hand again while simply opening a plastic food container (obviously my two years old injury wasn't properly healed). And these two injuries are coming in between periods of waiting for some medical tests and exams to be done in order to diagnose what is behind the pattern. I'm still not finished with those tests and let's say it's not a serene period, to say the least.

Comme les Anglais disent ”when it rains, it pours”, je ne connais pas d’équivalent en français, et vous? 

Depuis juillet 2016 je traverse une période difficile. 

Pour les lecteurs réguliers et ceux qui me connaissent, vous savez à quel point marcher chaque jour me permettait de m’équilibrer, or en octobre, en marchant, je suis blessée (sésamoïdopathie)

Mi-mars je me suis nouveau blessée à la main droite en ouvrant un tupperware (Récidive des déchirures musculaires d'il y a deux ans). Ces deux blessures arrivent dans le cadre d’un problème de santé plus général, dont des questions de tonicité musculaire, d’équilibre et d’extrême fatiguibilité en seraient les symptômes. Après des mois d'attente, depuis janvier des tests et examens pour un diagnostic sont en cours. 

Bref, ce n'est pas la forme, et c'est un euphémisme.

That is why there has been no new jewellery, no news, no pictures. I still can't work in the studio nor hold a camera nor use my keyboard to write. I'm using a vocal app and sometimes the misunderstandings are quite funny.

After a wordpress adventure, I’ve decided to come back to blogger. My website on wordpress was beautiful but there were some problems of maintenance and also because I didn't recognise myself anymore in this new site.

Since July I've taken a new path. I knew it would be long and difficult and I'm not being deceived. To make it short, till now, I had thought that I could change, that I could learn to be a different person than myself. My mistake. I mistook change for improvement, or is it the reverse? You know these simple aphorisms and little humoristic sentences that you can find on your Facebook wall? I remember having read one that went home sometime later  ”Be yourself, everybody else is taken”. So now, for several months, I’m walking along this difficult path of being myself. It’s a struggle, it’s painful, sometime I’m desperate but it’s the only way and I’m determined to go on.

and I'm also working on some new earrings and some necklaces too. And some brooches. I'm always working on different pieces at the same time. Some I started sometimes ago but need maturing. From time to time, I add something or move one element and that's it the piece is complete. For the "De Profundis" ring for example, I had made the fusing part with the little starfish or barnacle months ago... and it lays there on my desk and a few days ago I completed it.

It happens that I often find the solution while walking one morning on the beach. I firmly believe that the mechanics of the legs induces something in the brain ;-)

For other pieces I need to be elbow deep on my table  and try this and that.

Other times, I have an idea at the terrace of the café and draw something but once in the studio

This journal is the work of my friend the very talented Louise of Bibliographica

at the bench it will become something entirely different. And sometimes I only follow the material, that's what happened with the "De Profundis" ring.
I  am constantly searching for something, in constant evolution alongside trying new techniques. Some techniques I keep practising because I took a liking to it, like the rivets for example, some come and go when needed. I don't plan my work like some jeweller do designing entire collections each season, I'm not able to do so, to create something I have to let go, whereas planning is controlling. I can eventually sort my creations afterwards in different collections because of the inspiration, like the Sea urchin or Shells, or because of elements, like the artisan ceramic drops I love using in my designs, or because of a repeating elements like the found brass eyelets.
I think I just answered the question "How does your creative process work ?" :)

Why do you create what you do?
For me it is a need, when I'm working at my bench I'm here and now, a whole person. It's necessary, I can't live without. Once or twice, I declared "okay, it's sunday, so I'm not working" and then I'm like a lion in a cage, not knowing what to do with myself... right, I can read, work in the garden, work on the renovation of the house but nothing can give me what working at my bench does.
Previously that "need" had taken different forms, drawing, photographing, working for contemporary artists, sewing, designing my garden, but it wasn't as fulfilling and gratifying as designing and making jewelry is. What I particularly like is that when completed and eventually sold, a piece of jewelry will be worn by someone I don't know and this person will give this piece a whole new life, will attach personal meanings and intimate emotions to it.

How your work differ from others of its genre?

Difficult question. I don't like comparison, I don't think it positive, it's even destructive. I prefer to say that I feel or recognize a little something in the work of some artists and artisans that speak to me in a particularly way. 

Among these, I would like to name the wonderful work of Dawn from LaTouchables and of Jiorji of NearlyLost. On the 30th June it will be their turn to answer these questions!

I've made another version of my riveted ring, copper and oxidized silver, this is the first one made just for the like of it, it's not reserved nor custom made, it's available in the shop, yes!

Une autre version de ma bague Rivets, cuivre et argent oxydé. C'est la première fois que je fais cette bague hors commande, oui, oui vous avez bien lu, elle est disponible dans ma boutique!

these earrings are custom made, antique filigree that I've aged and riveted to the hammered red brass vintage setting, and the cherry on the cake is the absolute copper lustre bobble drops by the awesome Petra Carpreau of course!!!

and THE ring! last time I shared my wanderings about the width of the band and proportions and silver finish because I don't like it polished.... Tadaaaa!!! here is the result and I like it very much I must say. For the silver finish, I've simply applied my Granite touch of my Granite ring! and oxidized the silver so it's darker in the grooves of the texture and it suits the druzy of the rough tourmaline perfectly! Maybe I lack modesty but I don't care, I'm happy with it :D so I boast with another picture!

 et LA bague! La dernière fois, je vous parlais de mes errements et questionnements à propos de la largeur du bandeau et de proportions et aussi de la finition de l'argent, que je n'aime pas poli... et voici le résultat!! et je dois dire que j'en suis très contente. Pour la finition de l'argent et bien, j'ai appliqué la même technique que pour ma bague Granit! et j'ai oxydé l'argent comme ça le noir reste dans les creux et ça va parfaitement avec le granité de la pierre en tourmaline brute non taillée!!! Peut -être que je manque de modestie mais tant pis, je suis contente! :D et donc je biche en vous montrant une autre photo!

Atelier & atelier

After the wrecking party, we are now in a rebuilding phase of my future studio, yay!!!

First : fixing the windows and the door to make the place watertight.

Après le jeu de démolition, nous sommes désormais dans la phase de reconstruction de mon futur atelier, yes!!

Premièrement, mettre les fenêtres et la porte en place pour être hors d'eau.

(What you see is a bird cage, a little bit tipsy, that I've placed above the well to avoid anything to fall down)

we're doing all by ourselves, well I will admit with some little-great help from the man with the white beard and Sophie, so it's time consuming... and great fun too!

nous faisons tout par nous mêmes, bon avouons-le avec un peu-beaucoup d'aide de la part de l'homme à la barbe blanche et de Sophie, mais tout ça prend du temps... et c'est aussi une bonne partie de rigolade!

Black crackles drops earrings.  Amazing Petra's drops combined with darkened vintage corrugated brass links and found objects also darkened. Rapidly gone.

Boucles d'oreille Craquelures noires. Les gouttes de l'étonnante Petra associées et des maillons d'une chaine ancienne que j'ai noircis et d'anciens oeillets noircis egalement. Déjà vendues.

Oval earrings with an Art Deco touch : verdigris patina on vintage brass eyelets, brass hammered settings, darkened corrugated brass links… with a rivet! Did I tell you how much I love rivets? 

I first made a pair and for once and following some brilliant advice I had applied some verdigris patina on more than just a pair of eyelets so I got two pairs with the same color and finish, inbelievable! Usually as I am in trials and error mode I only work with a pair of finding to see if it's gonna turn out well and then I could majke some more when I'm satisfied with the result, wouldn't you? but then it is kind of boring, I must try something else or change something to see how it is going to turn… and so on and on...

 where was I? oh yes, for once I had exactly the same pair of verdigris ovals and I had some settings left and the first pair I sold so quickly that I was kind of frustrated, so I made another one right away!

et maintenant en français, bon, je ne vais peut être pas tout retraduire? si? okay, donc je disais que cette paire de boucles d'oreille avec un je-ne-sais-quoi d'Art Déco, j'en ai fai t une première paire, qui s'est vendue tellement vite que j'étais un peu désarçonnée, donc j'en ai fait une seconde paire. Il faut dire que pour une fois, sur les conseils avisés de je ne sais plus qui, j'avais appliqué de la patine non pas sur une paire d'oeillets mais sur deux paires… d'habitude, vu que j'essaie des techniques differentes sur des éléments différents et que je sais jamais trop ce que ça va donner, je teste sur deux éléments pour faire une paire pour voir. Des gens sensés et rationnels referaient en plus grande quantité ce qui a marché pour une paire, n'est-ce pas? mais refaire exactement la même chose est vraiment barbant, il faut que je change quelque chose dans le procédé, que je teste autre chose pour voir ce que ça va donner…

I'm very pleased with this pair above, I've named them The Golden Age, I like the mix of dark gold patina and bronze porcelain, but as often no question about repeating the pair, because I don't have anymore of these vintage filigrees, this is it!

Boucles d'oreille Age d'or. Cette paire ci-dessus me plaît beaucoup mais là, comme souvent pas question de répéter, car je n'ai tout simplement pas d'autres éléments similaires! et oui, c'est ça de travailler avec des stocks anciens!

and now a ring I'm working on with a rough top tourmaline cabochon

et maintenant je vous montre une bague sur laquelle je suis en train de travailler avec un cabochon de tourmaline noire donc le dessus est brut, non taillé

I spent some time making some square wire as I didn't have any and didn't have the patience to order some… and then I made two bands of different widths and none is satisfying… and then I realized that if I had taken time to think I would have thought that the right width was the depth of the setting of the stone…blah!!! Why didn't I use my little gray cells???

J'ai passé un temps certain à réaliser le fil carré comme je n'en avais pas et je n'avais pas la patience d'en commander… puis j'ai fait deux anneaux de largeur différentes mais aucun ne me satisfait… puis j'ai réalisé que si j'avais pris le temps de penser j'auraisvu que la "bonne" largeur est égale à la profondeur du sertis… argh!!! pourquoi diable n'ai-je pas utilisé mon cerveau???

I need to make more rings to be more easy with designs…and I'm not happy with the polished silver either…I would like to find another finish ...but then I like the contrast between the rough tourmaline… to be continued!

J'ai besoin de faire plus de bagues pour aquérir plus d'aisance dans le dessin… et je n'aime décidemment pas l'argent poli…je voudrais trouver une fintion différente, et en même temps, j'aime le contraste avec la texture brute de la pierre….à creuser!

So here is an example of another try with verdigris patina, this time this is a very crusty one! and I wanted it to be sealed otherwise the metal will be eaten away in time, but sealed with a resistant mat finish and I think I've found one!

The tiny bows are gold plated vintage and the white clochettes are matte too and artisan made by the talented Rey from Greybirdstudio, I love them. Absolutely one of a kind.

Voici un exemple d'essais toujours différents, ici la patine vert-de-gris est réalisée avec une autre recette et le résultat est très riche et texturé. Et fixé avec un fini mat.

Les petits noeuds sont anciens et plaqués or et les clochettes sont en porcelaine avec une finition mat également réalisées de façon artisanale par la talentueuse Rey de Greybirdstudio. Pièce ultra unique!

Des pièces en laiton rouge martelés, des éléments anciens estampés en laiton et des cristaux d'aigue-marine d'un vert aqueux délicieux. Et des rivets!!!!

C'est à nouveau la saison des vides-greniers, la chasse est ouverte!!!! 

Some vintage chains, I love these rolo silver ones, I was running out of stock, a rosary and a monogram supposed to be set on a box (?), I think it's E.R. (click on the images to see them better)

Des chaines anciennes, je commençais à être à court… un rosaire pour ses perles noires et des initiales qui devaient s'agrafer sur une boîte en tissu (?) je crois lire E.R. (cliquez directement sur les images pour mieux les voir)

Some more chains, un delicious locket, an exquisite flower brooch of underterminate material, a tiny child bracelet with a shell charm...

encore des chaînes, un délicieux pendentif ( le nom français m'échappe?!), une broche fleur subime d'une matière non encore identifiée, un bracelet d'enfant avec un pendentif en forme de coquillage...

and a vintage art deco necklace with beautiful glass beads… I've already so many ideas for these coral glass beads!!!

et un collier art deco ancien avec des belles perles en verre opaque… j'ai déjà plein d'idées pour ces magnifiques fleurs corail en verre, j'ai hâte de jouer avec!!!

Dancing mother of pearl earrings with a special dedicace to Marcia of 13alternatives who is having a stressful time at the moment

I bet you've recognized Petra's amazing bronzy tips with a mother of pearl crackle glaze and I've been bold enough to combine them with real mother of pearl, vintage cabochons! but I think it works, very difficult to take pictures of them though, and some dancing vintage and antique seed beads, matte and glossy ones on a waxed linen thread knotted and I've used some ancient notions of macrame (I must have learnt that sometime during those horrible holidays camps)

Je suppose que vous aurez reconnu les magnifiques créations céramiques de Petra avec un émail craquelé nacré et j'ai osé les associer à de la nacre, de la vraie, solide, en cabochons anciens. Mais je trouve que ça marche, bon, les photos sont pas super réussies, dur à photographier la nacre, avec des reflets partouts… et des perles de rocaille anciennes, voire très anciennes (fin 19e) mattes et brillantes que j'ai fait danser sur du fil de lin ciré, noué et tressé avec de vagues et anciennes notions de macramé (j'ai du apprendre ça quelque part lors d'une de ces atroces colonies de vacances)

A touch of roccoco : some rough apatite stones (thank you Marcia, I love them!) with some fancy golden findings on which I've added some darker patina to make them more dramatic. The color of the picture is not right, in person the apatite is slightly more green

Une association un rien baroque : des perles en apatite brute (non taillée) et des éléments dorés que j'ai patiné un peu plus sombre. J'adore cette pierre translucide, en vrai la couleur tire un peu plus sur le vert

Different versions of this riveted ring (I've already made two), above the sterling silver band is oxidized and thin (7mm) and below the sterling silver is brushed and the band is a little bit wider (8mm) but it is mostly the weathered copper band which is thinner so the gap showing the silver band is wider… question of proportions. Both are custom made.

Variations sur une bague (j'en ai déjà fait deux autres précédemment). La première fait 7 mm de large et l'argent a été oxydé en noir, la deuxième est légèrement plus large (8 mm) mais c'est surtout le bandeau de cuivre qui est plus fin laissant voir plus du bandeau d'argent… questions de proportions. Les deux sont des commandes sur mesures.
